With more than 25 million albums sold over their 42-year career, Manchester legends James are amongst the most commercially and artistically successful – and most loved – alternative rock bands of their era. Having gathered a cult following around compulsive art rock gallops like ‘Johnny Yen’ during the 1980s, they broke through to mainstream chart success with their 1990 major label debut Gold Mother and went on to unite the early Nineties with euphoric anthems of solace, love, sex, loss and frustration at the ills of the world: ‘Come Home’, ‘Sit Down’, ‘Sound’, ‘Sometimes (Lester Piggott)’ and ‘Laid’. Their fifth album Laid – the first of a string of James albums produced by Brian Eno – saw them break the US charts, while subsequent hit albums including Whiplash (1997), Millionaires (1999) and Pleased to Meet You (2001) cemented their standing as a classic 1990s singles act, adding ‘Tomorrow’, ‘She’s a Star’, ‘Just Like Fred Astaire’ and ‘Getting Away with It (All Messed Up)’ to their formidable canon.
Book nowIn 2020, as the world went into lockdown, Sam Ryder uploaded the first of his now infamous
covers. They quickly caught the attention of some famous fans (think Justin Bieber, Sia, Alicia
Keys and Elton John) – with compilations of his videos appearing on The Ellen Show, BBC’s
Newsbeat and more. As the videos kept coming, so did the fans – with his socials standing at
over 10 million followers to date and hundreds of thousands of comments.
Ocean Colour Scene have notched up nine albums, three of which went Top 5 – 1996’s Moseley Shoals, 1997’s Marchin’ Already and 1999’s One From The Modern – and a run of nine successive Top 20 hit singles commencing with 1996’s The Riverboat Song. They supported Oasis at their massive Knebworth shows that same year, and two years later helmed the biggest arena tour of any UK band to date. Their achievements have been nothing short of phenomenal.
From their days as Breton-shirt wearing disciples of The Stone Roses (debut single ‘Sway’) to million selling Britpop superstars (‘Marchin’ Already’ bumped Oasis’ ‘What the Story’ from the top spot in 1997) to long-term touring allies with Paul Weller, they have always stood shoulder to shoulder with the greats of modern British rock.
